Strong storms Thursday afternoon and night moved through the state, downing trees, knocking out electricity and dropping large hail.

Entergy Arkansas at one point Thursday reported more than 9,000 customers in the dark. Many had been restored by Friday morning, when the utility reported at 11 a.m. about 2,100 still without power. More than 1,700 of those were in Poinsett County.

There were no preliminary reports of injuries in Arkansas in the line of storms, which had been forecast days in advance to have severe-weather potential.

The National Weather Service listed no possible tornadoes in the state, though there were multiple reports of trees and large branches downed by heavy winds.

Among them, multiple trees were reported down at Kanis and Burlingame roads in the Ferndale area of western Pulaski County and trees were reported on homes in El Dorado and in Maumelle.

On Sharondale Place in Maumelle, a large tree crashed onto a house and through part of its roof. No one was in the home at the time, said Steve Keeton, a 67-year-old retired Arkansas Army National Guardsman. Keeton said it had been his mother's home until she died last year.

"I'm thankful mother wasn't in the house last night," Keeton said Friday as he surveyed the significant damage to the structure. "I'm sad she's gone, but I'm thankful she wasn't in the home."

A block away, on Sharondale Court, another large tree fell across the road Thursday night, blocking it completely until neighbors with chainsaws emerged and cut a path for emergency vehicles, Keeton said.

Trees were also upended by the winds at Gorman Road and Ruple Lane in Vilonia and power lines were downed near Vilonia Elementary School.

Hail across the state, meanwhile, ranged from quarter-sized in numerous locations to softball-sized in Portia in Lawrence County.
