The popularity of Record Store Day has a lot to do with the limited-edition vinyl records that go on sale during the Saturday event and frequently sell out in hours.
Here are some titles likely to be the most popular this year. Not all items will be available at all stores.
• Built to Spill, Untethered Moon. The latest by the Idaho indie-rock band is being widely released later this month, but will be available early for shoppers at the event.
• Johnny Cash, Koncert v Praze. This limited-edition release of a 1978 Cash concert recorded in Prague is being pressed on "Soviet red" vinyl.
• Miles Davis, The Prestige 10-Inch LP Collection, Vol. 2. Some of the jazz legend's earliest recordings have been reproduced with original artwork and liner notes.
• Grateful Dead, Wake Up to Find Out: Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 3/29/90. Rhino Records is releasing this sprawling, late-period Dead show in a five-LP set.
• Paul McCartney, The Family Way: Original Soundtrack Recording. McCartney was still a Beatle when he wrote and recorded the music for this 1966 British dramedy. The soundtrack has been a collector's item ever since.
• The 101ers, Elgin Avenue Breakdown (Revisited). Prior to The Clash, Joe Strummer was the frontman of a rowdy pub-rock act, whose complete recorded output was released on CD and now comes to vinyl in a two-LP set.
• Jaco Pastorius, Anthology: The Warner Bros. Years. The late jazz bassist will soon be the subject of a feature documentary directed by Metallica's bassist Robert Trujillo. This seven-song compilation pares his long discography to its essentials.
• Phish, Live at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995. One of Phish's best-loved New Year's Eve gigs becomes the jam band's first live vinyl release.
• Ride, Ox4: The Best of Ride. One of the best acts from the early 1990s "shoegaze" wave of U.K. guitar-rock gets its first vinyl anthology on two discs.
• Bruce Springsteen, The Album Collection Vol. 1 1973-1984. Previously available only in a boxed set, remastered editions of Springsteen's Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.; The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle; Born to Run; Darkness on the Edge of Town; The River; Nebraska; and Born in the U.S.A. are being released individually.
• The Stooges, Have Some Fun: Live at Ungano's. In keeping with this proto-punk band's raw, sloppy sound, this 1970 live album comes on "black and white spattered" vinyl.
• The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan. It wouldn't be Record Store Day without a new release by bluesy guitar-slinger Jack White, who's partly responsible for the vinyl revival through his Nashville, Tenn.-based label and store Third Man Records. This will be the first vinyl release of the Stripes' Grammy-winning 2005 LP.
Also, while Record Store Day is Saturday, one week later -- April 25 -- Arkansas Record-CD Exchange will host Third Man Records' "rolling record store" in the afternoon, as it drives from Oklahoma to Tennessee.
