Water utility plans bonds refinancing

Central Arkansas Water plans to refinance bonds that are estimated to save the utility about $498,000 over the life of the loans.

Under current interest rates, the utility is expected to pay $9.8 million by 2030 to pay off the $7.6 million note issued in 2010.

Stephens Inc. has calculated that under current rates that could be reduced to $9.3 million if the utility refinances the bonds. That represents a yearly savings of between $28,000 and $33,000 from 2015-30.

The actual amount of savings will depend on the interest rates at the time the bonds are sold, which is expected to be at the end of July.

Sustainability is focus of LR talk

A Little Rock native turned Washington, D.C., executive with the U.S. Green Building Council will give a lecture Tuesday at the Arkansas Arts Center.

The talk is titled “Where We Learn Matters” and will be given by Anisa Baldwin Metzger, who is the council’s manager of the Center for Green Schools.

She will discuss strategies for working with schools to develop ways of ensuring sustainability. In her role at the council, Baldwin Metzger oversees the organization’s state subsidiaries and sustainability efforts.

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated New Orleans, Baldwin Metzger helped schools rebuild with a commitment to “green” — or environmentally friendly — infrastructure.

She has architecture degrees from Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Washington in Seattle.

The lecture is to be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Arts Center at 501. E. Ninth St. A reception is to precede the event at 5:30 p.m.
