Sabres fire Nolan

The Buffalo Sabres fired coach Ted Nolan on Sunday, a day after their season ended with a second consecutive last-place finish. General Manager Tim Murray announced the decision in a release issued by the team. Nolan had two years left on a contract he signed a little more than a year ago. The Sabres had hired Nolan in November 2013 on an interim basis after Ron Rolston was fired. It was Nolan's second stint in Buffalo after he spent two seasons with the Sabres and was the NHL's coach of the year in 1997. This time, he took over a rebuilding team that went 23-51-8 this season.

Sock wins first ATP title

Jack Sock won the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships on Sunday for his first ATP World Tour title, beating eighth-seeded Sam Querrey 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2) in an all-American final in Houston. Sock, 22, saved three set points in the first tiebreaker in the rain-delayed match and quickly answered a break by Querrey in the second set to get the match back on serve. Sock became the sixth American to win the country's only men's clay-court tournament. He will climb to a career-high 36th in the ATP ranking. Sock, the Wimbledon doubles champion with Vasek Pospisil, was playing his first ATP singles final in only his third tournament of the season. He underwent surgery to repair a torn muscle in his hip in December and didn't return until Indian Wells last month.

Georgia names women's coach

Joni Crenshaw, Andy Landers' top assistant the last three years, has been named to succeed him as the Georgia women's basketball coach. Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity said Crenshaw was selected as only the second full-time coach in school history. McGarity said Sunday that Crenshaw brings "character, experience and a tireless energy" to the job. Landers retired on March 16 after 36 seasons. He was 862-299 at Georgia, including five Final Four appearances. He was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. Crenshaw joined Landers' staff in 2011 after working at LSU, Alabama, Louisiana Tech and Troy. She was a two-year starter at Alabama. Landers said the program "is in great hands" with Crenshaw.

Indians catcher out 2 months

Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes could miss two months because of a sprained knee ligament. Gomes was injured on a play at the plate in Saturday's loss to the Detroit Tigers. The Indians said an MRI at the Cleveland Clinic revealed Gomes sustained a "moderate" sprain to his medical collateral ligament and he will be out six to eight weeks. Gomes' leg was jolted violently by Detroit outfielder Rajai Davis, who slid hard on a force play and clipped the catcher's right leg. Gomes was extended at the time like a first baseman making a catch. Before Sunday's game, Gomes hobbled onto the field on crutches to receive his Silver Slugger Award from last season.

• Miami Marlins reserve infielder Don Kelly and backup catcher Jeff Mathis have left the game against Tampa Bay with similar injuries. Each broke the ring finger on his right hand while on defense. Kelly, who made his first start Sunday, was hurt fielding a grounder at third base in the second inning. Mathis left the game in the eighth after a pitch hit him.

Kerber clips Keys in 3 sets

Angelique Kerber won six of the last seven games to rally past Madison Keys and win the Family Circle Cup 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 on Sunday in Charleston, S.C. It was Kerber's fourth WTA title and first since 2013. She broke serve five times against an opponent who hadn't lost serve all week. Kerber trailed 4-1 in the final set, with the 20-year-old American using a strong serve to build what looked like a solid lead. The German won 12 of the next 16 to tie the match. Keys moved in front once more at 5-4 before Kerber took control for good. Kerber won the next game at love, then rallied from 40-0 down to break serve and pull ahead. Keys made four consecutive errors in the final game to give Kerber the match.

Marquez takes easy victory

Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez made an early pass and pulled away for an easy victory at the MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas on Sunday in Austin, Texas, grabbing his first victory of the 2015 season on a track he has dominated for three years. The Spaniard started on the pole but ceded first position to Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso of Italy out the first turn. Marquez, 22, was back in front by the fourth lap and steadily pulled away from the field to win by more than two seconds at the Circuit of the Americas. The two-time defending world champion has won three years in a row in Austin. He needed the victory to boost his bid for a third consecutive title after finishing fifth in the season opener in Qatar. Dovizioso finished second. Movistar Yamaha's Valentino Rossi of Italy was third.

Lewis Hamilton put Mercedes back on top in Formula One, leading nearly the entire race Sunday to capture his fourth Chinese Grand Prix. Mercedes made sure there would be no repeat of Ferrari's surprising win two weeks ago at Malaysia, as it conserved its tires wisely to withstand a challenge by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and easily secure the top two spots on the podium. Hamilton's teammate, Nico Rosberg, finished second and Vettel was third.
