Memphis man sentenced to life in fatal shooting of wife

MEMPHIS — Prosecutors say a Memphis man has been sentenced to life in prison for the fatal shooting of his estranged wife in 2012.

The Shelby County district attorney's office said Tuesday that 49-year-old John Simmons pleaded guilty as his trial was about to begin Monday.

Brendia Simmons was found dead July 19, 2012, in the bedroom of a home.

Investigators said John Simmons had called his daughter and his mother and told them he intended to kill his wife.

Prosecutors with the district attorney's domestic violence unit and a special prosecution unit handled the case.
