April good to Lynn, leads Cards over Brewers

CARDINALS 4, BREWERS 2

ST. LOUIS -- Lance Lynn extended his April success with five solid innings and Matt Holliday had a two-run single in the first inning, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night.

Lynn (1-1) allowed one run and six hits. He pushed his April record to 13-2 since 2012, the best record in the majors over that period.

Wily Peralta (0-1) gave up 4 runs on 10 hits over 5 innings for Milwaukee.

Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez was removed from the game in the ninth inning. He was limping after beating out a play at first base.

Yadier Molina had 3 hits for St. Louis, which won 12 of 19 against Brewers last season.

Kevin Siegrist, Seth Maness, Matt Belisle, Randy Choate, Jordan Walden and Trevor Rosenthal followed Lynn. Rosenthal picked up his third save despite giving up a two-out run-scoring hit to Ryan Braun in the ninth.

Lynn worked out of trouble in 4 of his 5 innings and threw 99 pitches. He rebounded to set the side down in order on 16 pitches in the fifth.

The Cardinals needed just six pitches to take a 2-0 lead. Matt Carpenter singled and Jason Heyward doubled before Holliday ripped the first pitch to right field. Holliday has a hit in all seven games this season.

CUBS 5, REDS 0 Travis Wood (1-1) pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning and Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run of the season, leading host Chicago to a victory over Cincinnati. The Cubs (5-3) won two of three games in the series and moved back into first place in the National League Central. Wood (Bryant) walked two and struck out seven.

METS 6, PHILLIES 1 Travis d'Arnaud homered after assuming David Wright's spot in the lineup, Lucas Duda also went deep and New York defeated Philadelphia for a three-game sweep in its first home series this season. Jonathon Niese pitched out of trouble for 6 1/3 innings and helped himself with a run-scoring single. Duda hit a long home run and an RBI double as the Mets won their fourth in a row.

PADRES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2 Justin Upton homered with two outs in the eighth inning to give host San Diego a victory over Arizona. Upton hit the first pitch he saw from Randall Delgado (0-1) into the seats in left. It was his third.Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his third save in as many chances.

MARLINS 6, BRAVES 2 Dan Haren gave up three hits in seven innings, Adeiny Hechavarria went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBI and host Miami beat Atlanta.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ANGELS 10, RANGERS 2 Mike Trout had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run to back another victory in Texas for Hector Santiago as visiting Los Angeles beat Texas. Santiago (1-1) allowed 1 run and 4 hits over 7 innings, with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA in five career starts at Texas.

ASTROS 6, ATHLETICS 1 Collin McHugh struck out 11, and Jed Lowrie hit one of three home runs for host Houston in a victory over Oakland. Luis Valbuena and Evan Gattis also homered for the Astros, who matched their season high in scoring. McHugh (2-0) allowed 6 hits and 1 run in 5 2/3 innings.

BLUE JAYS 12, RAYS 7 Jose Bautista and rookies Devon Travis and Dalton Pompey homered to back Mark Buehrle, Kevin Pillar made a leaping catch at the left-field wall to deny a home run and host Toronto beat Tampa Bay to stop the Rays' four-game winning streak. Bautista hit a two-run home run in the first off Erasmo Ramirez (0-2).

ORIOLES 7, YANKEES 5 Jonathan Schoop homered to spark a five-run sixth inning, Chris Davis had three RBI and host Baltimore defeated New York. Manny Machado hit his first home run of the season and Caleb Joseph went 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Orioles, who took two of three from New York. Alex Rodriguez homered for the Yankees, his second following a yearlong drug suspension.

TWINS 3, ROYALS 1 Kansas City became the last team in the majors to lose this season, as Kyle Gibson pitched into the seventh inning and Oswaldo Arcia hit a two-run home run for Minnesota in a victory over the Royals. The Royals (7-1) were chasing the 2003 team's 9-0 start as the best in franchise history, but Gibson (1-1) used 12 groundball outs and three strikeouts to keep the highest-scoring team in the majors quiet for a night.

INDIANS 4, WHITE SOX 2 Trevor Bauer won consecutive starts for the first time in his major league career, helping host Cleveland beat Chicago to stop a four-game losing streak.

INTERLEAGUE

TIGERS 1, PIRATES 0 Alfredo Simon (2-0) gave up two hits over eight dominant innings, and visiting Detroit beat Pittsburgh. Rajai Davis hit a leadoff home run in the sixth against Francisco Liriano (0-1) as Detroit shut out Pittsburgh for the second consecutive day. Joakim Soria worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save while filling in for injured Joe Nathan.

NATIONALS 10, RED SOX 5 Wilson Ramos hit a three-run double and Ian Desmond added a home run during Washington’s six-run third inning, and the Nationals beat host Boston to avoid a three-game sweep.
