LITTLE ROCK — A federal judge says he needs more information before deciding whether the new Jacksonville School District can be a party to a decades-old desegregation case involving the Pulaski County Special School District.
Lawyers for the Pulaski County district have asked U.S. District Judge D. Price Marshall Jr. to approve a plan to detach the Jacksonville district from PCSSD. Jacksonville voters in November approved creating the new district, which will be carved out of about 24 percent of the existing Pulaski district.
Attorneys for the Jacksonville district told Marshall on Friday the district wants to join the case because the court could have final say in several aspects of the district's organization if those aspects are found to be related to the desegregation case.
Another hearing is scheduled for May 19.
