Papandreou to speak at Harding University

Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou will speak at Harding University in Searcy on Thursday, the university has said.

Papandreou served as prime minister of Greece from 2009 until 2011, when he resigned mid-way through his four-year term to make way for a unity government during the nation’s debt crisis. He had also served as Greek foreign minister from 1999-2004. A member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, the political party that was founded by his father and is known as PASOK, he was first elected to Greek parliament in 1981.

“Named as one of Foreign Policy magazine’s "Top 100 Global Thinkers” in 2010 for “making the best of Greece’s worst year," he speaks with authority on the state of the Eurozone today and the future of the European Union,” Harding University said in a statement.

Papandreou will give his free, public speech at 7:30 p.m. in Benson Auditorium on the Harding campus. The talk concludes this year’s Harding University American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series. More information is available by calling the American Studies Institute at (501) 279-4497.
