State contest open for school gardens

Arkansas schools pre-kindergarten through 12th grade that had a working school garden in the 2014-15 school year are invited to enter the second annual Arkansas Grown School Garden of the Year contest. Photo or video documentation is required. The contest is sponsored by the Arkansas Agriculture Department and Farm Credit.

The contest celebrates schools that promote teamwork, hands-on instruction and proper nutrition through school gardening.

A committee will determine the winners in the following categories:

• Best Nutrition Education Based Garden -- $500

• Best Community Collaboration Award -- $500

• Best Environmental Education Focused Garden -- $500

• Overall Winning Arkansas Grown School Garden of the Year Award -- $1,500

Applications are due by Aug. 31 at surveymonkey.com/s/ARKSCHOOLGARDEN
