Schools in state graded A-F

Arkansas' more than 1,000 public schools received letter grades for the first time last week, ranging from A's for excellence to F's for schoolwide low achievement.

The new letter grades -- required under Act 696 of 2013 -- will not carry any penalties or rewards for the schools. They are intended to be more easily understood than the previous state practice of rating schools annually on a scale of 1-5.

The grading scale took into account school results on state-required 2013-14 Benchmark and End-of-Course math and literacy tests; any year-to-year gains made by a school on state tests; the size of achievement gaps among student groups at a school; and, if applicable, a school's graduation rate. The formula also took into account any differences in graduation rates among student subgroups.

The report cards accompanying the letter grades contain multiple kinds of data for the three most recently completed school years and are more than a dozen pages long for each school. Those are available on the department's website: arkansased.gov.

The letter grades and points used to calculate those grades for each school, listed by district, are in today's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Pages 14-15A.
