Anderson speaking in Wynne

Arkansas basketball Coach Mike Anderson will speak Thursday night in Wynne at a banquet hosted by the East Central Razorback Club. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Technology Center of the Delta.

UALR’s Beard makes first hire

New UALR men’s basketball Coach Chris Beard, who was hired April 8, has hired Brian Burg as an assistant coach, Athletic Director Chasse Conque confirmed on Monday.

Burg spent the last two seasons as an assistant at North Carolina Central, a Division I program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. North Carolina Central won the MEAC regular-season title and advanced to the NIT this season.

Before that, Burg spent four seasons as an assistant at Campbell University.

Henderson State men take lead in GAC

Henderson State moved past Southern Nazarene to take the lead at the Great American Conference Tournament at the Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs.

The Reddies followed their first-round 291 with a second-round 287 and lead with a 578, holding an eight-stroke lead over Arkansas Tech. Southern Nazarene, which led after the first round with a 289, is third at 593.

Arkansas Tech’s Brian Belz leads the individual standings with a 151 (69-72). Henderson State’s Drew Greenwood and teammate Brice Howard shot a second-round 71 and are tied for second with Southwestern Oklahoma State’s Manuel Arzuaga at 143.

Rounding out the team standings are Southwestern Oklahoma State (595), Arkansas-Monticello (597), Southeastern Oklahoma State (598), Southern Arkansas (601), Harding (603), East Central (609) and Ouachita Baptist (653).

The final round will be played today.

Arkansas Tech leads GAC women

Arkansas Tech leads the GAC women’s championship at the Hot Springs Country Club by 36 strokes.

The Golden Suns shot a second-round 301 and has a 36-hole total of 598, leading Henderson State, which shot 634 for two rounds.

The Golden Suns have four golfers in the top five, led by Megan Jeffery and Caroline Fredensborg, who are tied for second at 148 (73-75). Taylor Kline is fourth at 150 (75-75). Rebecka Surtevall is fifth at 152 (76-76).

Harding’s Brittany Marquez is the individual leader at 146 (74-72).

Rounding out the standings are Southwestern Oklahoma State (642), East Central (666), Arkansas-Monticello (666), Southern Nazarene (669), Southern Arkansas (672) and Harding (673).

TRACK AND FIELD

Arkansas men seventh, women fifth in rankings

Arkansas’ men team is ranked seventh in this week’s United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association poll while the women are fifth.

The men, who were eighth a week ago, moved up one spot before this week’s Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

The women kept its ranking before going to Des Moines this weekend.
