UAM to preserve ROTC program

MONTICELLO -- The University of Arkansas at Monticello will keep its Army ROTC program on campus as part of a consolidation agreement with the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Officials at both universities announced last year that UAM's ROTC program would end as part of the consolidation, but a news release issued Monday from the Monticello school indicated the program will not be moving.

UAM also will continue offering minors in military science and leadership, officials said.

UAM interim Chancellor Jay Jones said he and others at the school agreed that keeping an ROTC presence there was important to all involved.

"The ROTC leadership has indicated to us that our campus has produced quality officers and that it is eager to continue to offer the program at Monticello," Jones said in a news release. "We want to make sure that the people of southeast Arkansas are aware of the program and its continued availability. We are very excited to announce that the core ROTC courses are scheduled on the Monticello campus again in the fall."

The UAM Army ROTC program has been governed by UAPB since 2004, and Army ROTC courses have been offered at UAM through a written agreement with UAPB since 2005.

Per the agreement, students may enroll at UAM and earn a minor in military science, which is a four-year program. A student may also select the leadership minor, a 19-hour academic minor that includes two years of coursework from the military science curriculum, as well as courses from other academic programs of study, according to the university.
