LISA Academy student arrested after gun found in car

A 17-year-old Little Rock student was arrested Thursday morning at school after an officer found a stolen handgun in his vehicle during a drug search, police say.

LISA Academy officials requested police perform a narcotics search about 9 a.m., according to a Little Rock Police Department report.

A police dog detected "the presence of the odor of narcotics" while searching the exterior of a car parked at the school, the report states.

The officer noticed what appeared to be a black handgun wedged between the front seat and console when he looked through the car windows during the search, according to the report.

Assistant Principal Judith Knieling brought the student to the vehicle while it was searched, police said. Knieling told police she had authority to search the vehicle per the school's handbook.

The officer questioned the student, who said he drove the vehicle to school and that no one else had recently driven the car or been in it, the report states.

During the search, the officer confirmed that there was a handgun in the vehicle and disarmed it, police said.

Authorities determined that the gun had been stolen from Benton, and the student was arrested, the report states.

The 17 year-old was charged with theft by receiving and possessing a hand gun on school property, and transported to the Pulaski County juvenile detention center.
