Maumelle student arrested after drinking on campus

A Maumelle High School student was arrested Friday after he admitted to drinking beer in a school restroom, police say.

A school resource officer was notified about 11:36 a.m. that a male student had been drinking beer on campus and was "drunk and disorderly," Maumelle Police Department spokesman Lt. Dustin Ivey said.

The resource officer was at the police station assisting other officers after a teacher hit a student's vehicle and appeared to be intoxicated Friday morning, Ivey said. The incidents are unrelated, according to Ivey.

A teacher took the student to the principal's office where he admitted that he drank a beer in the school restroom and had more in his backpack, according to a Maumelle Police Department report.

An officer searched the backpack and found more beer, the report states.

The student cursed at officers and said he told school officials if police came "we will have trouble," according to the report.

An officer told the student he was under arrest and the student became combative and tried to bite officers who attempted to restrain him, police said.

The student was warned that officers would have to pepper spray him if he did not cooperate, the report states.

Officers pepper-sprayed the student after he continued to curse at officers and resist arrest, police said. The student said, "I give up, arrest me" and officers transported him to the Maumelle Police Department, the report states.

Police charged the student with public intoxication, possession of intoxicating liquor by a minor, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, all misdemeanor offenses, the report states.

The student was released to his mother after she provided proof he was being admitted to a psychiatric and behavioral healthcare facility, police said.
