PINE BLUFF — A Pine Bluff mechanic has been arrested after authorities say his pack of pit bull dogs mauled a man to death.

John Chester Smith, 62, arrested and taken to the Jefferson County jail after being charged with manslaughter. He was released on $5,000 bond, according to jail records.

The county prosecutor charged Smith in the March death of 36-year-old De'Trick Omar Johnson of Pine Bluff.

Authorities say Johnson had approached Smith's business when the dogs rushed under a fence and attacked him. They say Smith wasn't present at the time of the attack.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The county sheriff's office said the owner had been warned about the dogs in the past because of their aggressive behavior.
