Allen, defense stand out in spring game

— Brandon Allen threw three touchdown passes to help lead Arkansas' starters to a 62-18 win in the Red-White Game on Saturday at Razorback Stadium.

Allen led the starters on five scoring drives before halftime, helping the Red team to a 40-9 lead. He completed 17 of 21 passes for 230 yards and didn't play in the second half.

The senior had touchdown passes of 65 and 14 yards to Keon Hatcher, and 4 yards to Jeremy Sprinkle. Hatcher led all receivers with 91 yards on three catches, while Sprinkle and Hunter Henry each had four receptions.

Offensive Player of the Game: QB Brandon Allen completed 17 of 21 passes for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Red team.

Defensive Player of the Game: DE JaMichael Winston was credited with three sacks for the Red team.

Play of the Game: Allen threw a perfect pass on a 65-yard touchdown to Keon Hatcher in the second quarter. Hatcher got behind cornerback Ryder Lucas in man-to-man coverage on the play and was never touched on his way to the end zone.

Notable: Arkansas coach Bret Bielema got the clean game he asked for from his players. The teams combined to commit only three penalties and there were no turnovers.

Attendance: 41,220

Kody Walker added touchdown runs of 25, 2 and 1 yards for the first-team. Walker finished the scrimmage with 174 yards on 26 carries.

Returning 1,000-yard running backs Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins were held out of the scrimmage.

The Razorbacks' starting defense was as effective as the starting offense, forcing a three-and-out in the first seven possessions and allowing only one first down. The backup offense finished the scrimmage with 44 yards on 28 plays.

JaMichael Winston was credited with three sacks for the Red team.Linebacker Josh Harris stood out for the backup defense, recording 12 tackles. Defensive end Karl Roesler was credited with two sacks for the reserves.

Neither team committed a turnover. The starters finished without committing a penalty.

The White team scored all of its points during a scored field goal competition after the first and third quarters. Adam McFain made 5 of 8 field goal attempts, with a long of 43 yards. Lane Saling made 6 of 8 attempts, including two good attempts from 42 yards.

Kicker Cole Hedlund didn't scrimmage because of a leg injury.

Quarterback Austin Allen played the first half with the second-team offense before spending the second half with the starters. Allen completed 3 of 6 passes for 14 yards with the backups, but was 6-for-7 for 43 yards and a touchdown with the starters.

The game featured four 12-minute quarters with a running clock in the second half. Second-team touchdowns were slated to be worth 12 points.
