Fayetteville man drives wrong way on I-49, hits police car

FAYETTEVILLE -- A Fayetteville man was taken to a hospital after he was driving the wrong way on Interstate 49 at 3:20 a.m. Friday, according to Arkansas State Police.

Trammell S. Starr was driving a 2000 Honda Accord south in the northbound lanes of I-49 near Porter Road, according to a news release. He was going from Springdale to Fayetteville, according to the report.

Starr's age wasn't available Friday.

Law enforcement was looking for the Accord after several people called about a vehicle driving against the traffic, according to the report.

Fayetteville officer Remar B. Benson met the Accord at Porter Road and partially blocked the road to stop it, according to the report. The left front of the Accord hit the left front of the police car and caused minor damage to both, according to the report.

Starr was disoriented and not aware he was going the wrong way, according to the report. He was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville as a precaution but was released, according to state police.

Starr was cited for careless driving.
