2 knife attackers slain, Israel police say

JERUSALEM -- Israeli police officers Saturday shot dead two knife-wielding Palestinians in response to separate attacks against Israeli officers, police said, before a third attack later in the day left three officers injured.

In the first attack, police spokesman Luba Samri said, an east Jerusalem resident, Ali Mohammed Abu Ghannam, 17, approached a roadblock with a butcher knife and tried to attack officers. Samri said officers shot Abu Ghannam dead after he refused to lay down his weapon. Dozens of Palestinian youths fought with police after the shooting.

Later, in the West Bank city of Hebron, a Palestinian attacked an Israeli police officer there, stabbing him several times. The officer was in stable condition. Samri said other officers on the scene killed the assailant.

Finally, late Saturday, a car driving toward the Mount of Olives cemetery in east Jerusalem swerved toward the pavement and ran over three Israeli officers, wounding one seriously, police said. The driver was not caught.
