3 counties to add Civil War markers

Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Markers will be added in three counties, said Tom Dupree, chairman of the commission overseeing the markers' approval.

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission works with local partners to tell stories of how the Civil War affected communities in the state. Applications for historical markers and other information on sesquicentennial observances are available at the commission's website, arkansascivilwar150.com.

In Crawford County, a marker denoting the Van Buren Raid will be placed at the Drennen-Scott House in Van Buren. The Union attack on Van Buren in late December 1862 culminated the Prairie Grove Campaign. The marker is sponsored by the Drennen-Scott Historic Site of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

A Dallas County marker will commemorate military activities along the Warren-Princeton Road and is sponsored by the Dallas County Museum. The marker will be on West Third Street in Fordyce.

In Saline County, a marker for Col. William Crawford and Gen. George Holt will commemorate the prominent Confederate officers from Saline County. Sponsored by the David O. Dodd Camp 619, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the marker is to be at Lee Cemetery in Benton.

There have been 120 sesquicentennial markers approved for 64 of the state's 75 counties, according to commission records.
