Children's Hospital honors five who make a difference

Arkansas Children's Hospital raised a glass for four doctors and a nonprofit director at its ninth annual Ruth Olive Beall and Betty A. Lowe, M.D., Awards on April 16 at Chenal Country Club.

Dr. Dennis Kuo, who studied pediatric medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, received the Drs. Joanna J. & Robert W. Seibert Award, which specifically recognizes teamwork by a physician or caregiver. "A lot of medicine has moved toward teamwork. ... We've gone so far beyond working by ourselves in a clinic."

He mentioned population health work, which aims to change everyday choices people make that affect their health. "We work with so many other folks because taking care of our kids goes beyond what we do in an office."

Other winners:

Dr. Richard Jackson, the Ruth Olive Beall Award winner, is a pediatric surgeon who has handled trauma care and cancer patients at the hospital.

Dr. Stacie Jones, the Dr. Robert H. Fiser, Jr., Research Achievement Award winner, is a chief of the Allergy and Immunology department who has developed ground-breaking food allergy therapies.

Dr. Chad Rodgers, the Dr. Tom Ed Townsend Award winner, is a former chief resident at the hospital who's now a private-practice pediatric physician, serves on several philanthropic boards, and founded the Reach Out and Read program at the hospital.

Peggy McCall, the Betty A. Lowe, M.D., award winner, is director of The Miracle League of Arkansas, an organization dedicated to organizing baseball games for children with a range of disabilities.
