Wild pitch gives ASU victory

Arkansas State pinch-runner Tim Seldomridge scored on a ninth-inning wild pitch to give the Red Wolves (18-23, 7-16 Sun Belt) a 7-6 victory over Appalachian State(13-31, 5-18) on Sunday at Tomlinson Stadium in Jonesboro.

With the scored tied 6-6 in the botom of the ninth, Zach George led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Schrimpf before being replaced by Seldomridge. After an Appalachian State pitching change, Austin Baker reached on an error and Seldomridge moved to third.

Ty Michelotti, the Mountaineers made another pitching change with two on and one out and a 3-0 count on ASU pinch-hitter. Reliever Caleb McCann, trying to intentionally walk Michelotti, threw a wild pitch that allowed Seldomridge to slide home safely for the winning run.

Reliever Tyler Zuber (4-4) earned the victory for ASU, allowing 1 run on 1 hit with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk through 5 innings. Reed Howell, who started the ninth for Appalachian State, took the loss after allowing 2 runs with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in 3 1/3 innings.

ASU starter Jon Glidewell gave up 5 runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Baker led the Red Wolves with two hits and three RBI, including his team-high fourth home run. Lucas Feddersen had 2 hits and 2 RBI. George also had two hits and extended his nation-leading on-base streak to 58 games. Appalachian State was led by home runs from Matt Brill and Connor Leonard.

Arkansas State led 4-0 after one inning, and held the Mountaineers scoreless until the fifth, when Appalachian State closed the gap to 4-3 on Brill's two-run home run. Zuber took the mound for ASU, getting two outs before giving up Leonard's three-run home run that put Appalachian State on top 6-4.

The Red Wolves got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Baker scored on Feddersen's RBI single, but the score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh, when Baker hit a home run to tie the game at 6-6.

INDIANA STATE 2, UALR 1

For the second consecutive game, UALR (14-25) lost on a game-winning hit by Indiana State's Manny Estevez at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, Ind.

Indiana State scored its first run in the first inning as Landon Curry scored from second on a fielding error to make it 1-0.

UALR's run came in the eighth. Drew Merten walked on seven pitches before Jason Prevatt came on to pinch run. Justin Steelmon's sacrifice bunt moved Prevatt to second. Prevatt took third on a ground out, then scored on Ryan McSwain's RBI single.

UALR starter Cory Malcom gave up 1 run on 1 hit and struck out 4 in 5 innings. Reliever Sam Theole (2-6) took the loss, giving up one run on 3 hits in 3 1/3 innings with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

The Trojans and Sycamores (19-21) combined for six hits.

Estevez hit a two-out, two-run home run Friday night to lead the Sycamores to a 6-4 victory.

SOUTHLAND

CENTRAL ARKANSAS 5, NEW ORLEANS 0

Central Arkansas pitcher Riley Echols pitched a complete game shutout as the Bears (23-15, 13-8 Southland) beat New Orleans (13-29, 3-18) at Bear Stadium in Conway.

Echols' complete game, the Bears's fourth consecutive, matched efforts by Connor Gilmore and Brandon Hagerla in the weekend series and gave the three pitchers a combined 0.00 ERA for the weekend.

Echols (3-2) gave up 6 hits, struck out 5 and walked 1 in his first career complete game. Hezekiah Randolph had New Orleans only extra-base hit with a ninth-inning double. Echols then retired Parker Jones on a ground out to end the game.

UCA scored two runs in the second inning, as Brad Dillenberger and Hayden Steele drew one-out walks, then scored on consecutive RBI singles from Logan Preston and Ty Tice.

The Bears scored three more in the eighth on Wesley Hoover's two-RBI double. Matt Anderson's RBI set the final score.

SWAC

UAPB 7-8, GRAMBLING STATE 6-0

Chris Phelps and Roberto Colon scored on consecutive RBI singles in the 10th inning as Arkansas-Pine Bluff beat Grambling State in the opener, then Humberto Medina and Andre Davis combined for a four-hit shutout in the second game as UAPB (22-16, 16-6 SWAC) won both halves of a doubleheader against Grambling State (9-30, 7-14) at Torii Hunter Complex in Pine Bluff, securing their lead in the SWAC's West division.

In the opener, UAPB took a 2-1 in the first inning as Davis and Gabe Munoz scored on an RBI single by Chris Burns and a fielding error, then scored again in the fourth as Vladimir Gomez crossed on a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead. Grambling closed the gap to 3-2 in the fifth, but the Golden Lions answered with two more runs on Josh Cassidy's 2-RBI single to make it 5-3.

Grambling scored twice in the sixth and added another in the eighth to tie the score, then took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the inning, Phelps and Colon scored on singles from Colon and Davis, respectively, to set the final score.

In the second game, Medina gave up 4 hits and 6 walks with 7 strikeouts through 8 1/3 innings and Davis struck out the final two batters as the Lions rolled over the Tigers.

Colon led the Lions at the plate, finishing 3 for 5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Rashawn Tillman and Chris Burns had 2 RBI each and five UAPB players had two hits each.
