Dallas County health chief says they weren't ready for Ebola

DALLAS — The chief epidemiologist for the Dallas County health department says they were not equipped to handle last fall's Ebola scare on their own.

Dr. Wendy Chung of Dallas County Health and Human Services spoke Tuesday during a panel discussion in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Big Cities Health Coalition on how urban public health departments can battle infectious diseases.

She said her team lacked the resources it needed to track and manage Ebola so they needed significant help from federal officials.

She told The Dallas Morning News after the panel, "We can't continue like this. This is not ideal."

Thomas Eric Duncan was diagnosed with Ebola after traveling to Dallas from West Africa. He died Oct. 8. Two Dallas nurses who treated him also became infected, but survived.
