Kids these days

Reading through last Sunday's sports section, you might have noticed all the young, smiling faces as the paper's staff put together the All-Academic Team from around the state. From Booneville to Batesville, from Camden to Ozark, high school athletes were singled out for what they accomplished in the classroom.

A quick glance through the notes on each student-athletes revealed . . . .

One had a GPA of 4.51. Another scored a 4.32. And yet another a 4.8.

A four-point-eight GPA? We've heard of getting more than four points for taking, and acing, honors classes, but that's over and beyond the call of academic duty.

For anybody cynical enough to think that some honors courses might not be as difficult at this school or the other, or if anybody thinks the student-athletes were given, er, more than fair grades by their teachers, take a peek at those ACT scores, too, which can't be inflated by friendly teachers. These students scored 32s, 29s, 33s, 35s. These kids are legit scholars.

Now off to college with you all. Make everybody proud--again.
