SHERIDAN -- Fred Green is at his home in Madison township suffering with 75 buckshot wounds in his back and Tom Putts is in jail, charged with the shooting as the result of an alleged family quarrel Saturday morning. It is said the men, who are brothers-in-law, had a fight at the home of a neighbor early Saturday and exchanged several blows. Later in the day, as Green was en route to his home, he was shot from ambush. Sheriff Mathews arrested Putts.

• Solutions to the problem of disposing of scrap tires are not just around the corner, the Solid Waste Fact Finding Task Force learned Thursday. Its members did find out the scope of the problem, though. Based on national estimates, Arkansas has generated enough scrap tires to assign one to each of the state's 2.4 million residents. That does not include thousands of scrap tires dumped from other states that regulate the disposal of tires more stringently than Arkansas.

• Attorney General Mike Beebe said Tuesday that since he became a candidate for governor he's stopped appearing in television and radio public service announcements funded by his office. "Even though I continue to do the job of attorney general, and I think the PSAs are important, to avoid any criticism at all, we didn't have any more PSAs after my announcement for governor," Beebe said in an interview. But he said there's nothing wrong with appearing in such announcements and he may appear in such advertisements funded by other government agencies. Beebe of Searcy, a Democrat, and Asa Hutchinson of Little Rock, a Republican and a former congressman, are major-party candidates who have announced for the governor's race. The general election will be Nov. 7, 2006.
