A Fayetteville man was arrested in connection with stealing a gun from a pawn shop Friday after surveillance video taken two hours earlier showed him sticking it down his shorts and leaving the store, according to police.

Patrick William Hayden, 28, of 1400 E. 15th No. 5 was arrested Friday in connection with felony theft of property and possession of a firearm by certain persons, according to jail records.

Police were called at 6:05 p.m. Friday to Mountain Man Pawn Shop, 1650 S. School Ave., after an employee noticed a gun missing from display case, according to a preliminary police report. Surveillance video showed a man wearing a red hat turned backwards, white sleeveless muscle shirt and black gym shorts lean over the display case 4:46 p.m. Friday. The man took a .22 pistol valued at $275, put it down the front of his shorts and left with another person, according to the report.

The employee gave police the name of the person who the man left with and relatives pointed them to a neighboring mobile home. Hayden answered the door dressed as he was in the surveillance video officers had just seen, according to the report.

Hayden told police the gun was in his room in a laundry basket, where it was found. He was arrested at 6:45 p.m., according to the report.

The gun was returned to the pawn shop, according to the report.

Hayden was being held Sunday in the Washington County Detention Center on a $3,500 bond, according to jail records.
