7/27/15 Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/STEPHEN B. THORNTON A ten day old baby chimpanzee clings to his mother Mahale in the shade of their enclosure at the Little Rock Zoo Monday afternoon. The zoo has launched an online poll asking the public to vote for one of three names for the new male chimp born on July 18th. The chimps are free to move indoors and out but the zoo states that the best certain time to see the new baby and the chimp family is during the 1:30 p.m. feeding.

The chimpanzee born last month at the Little Rock Zoo has been named Jumoke, the zoo announced Monday.

Jumoke is Swahili for “everyone loves the child.”

The name, pronounced joo-MOH-key, received 42 percent of the vote with 584 votes. A total of 1,401 votes were cast in a poll on the zoo’s website.

The male chimp was born July 18 to Mahale. The father is believed to be Kijana, who is described as "the alpha male chimpanzee of the group,” by zoo officials.

The zoo said Jumoke and his family are most likely to be visible to the public during the 1:30 p.m. scatter feed at the Great Ape exhibit every day, but Jumoke and his mother have access to an indoor air-conditioned area and have the option to stay inside.
