Dermott woman pleads guilty in feeding-program fraud

A Dermott woman pleaded guilty Monday to stealing money from a feeding program for children in low-income areas, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Kattie Jordan, 50, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright to a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Christopher Thyer said in a statement.

Jordan was serving as a sponsor for a U.S. Department of Agriculture summer feeding program, Thyer said.

An indictment originally handed up in December and superseded in April charged Jordan and three other people with conspiring to steal USDA funds through the program, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

Jordan submitted claims for more meals than were actually served in order to receive payment from the Arkansas Department of Human Services, the indictment states.

“Jordan and others stole money that was intended to feed poor and hungry children,” Thyer said in the statement.

Jordan will be sentenced by Wright at a later date. The statutory penalty for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud is up to 20 years in prison, up to a $250,000 fine or both, and up to three years of supervised release.
