Rabid bat confirmed in Hot Springs

Hot Springs Animal Services said it has received confirmation that a bat found last week had rabies.

The bat was collected at the Arlington Park Court, off Malvern Avenue, officials said Monday, near the Hot Springs Country Club and Golf Course.

No other animals or humans were exposed to the rabid bat, officials said.

So far in 2015, three rabid animals have been confirmed in Garland County: two skunks and one bat, the city said. Pulaski and Lonoke counties lead the state in number of confirmed rabies cases this year, officials said.

Hot Springs officials urged pet owners to vaccinate against rabies all dogs and cats at least 4 months old. Residents who want to report “unusual daytime activity by nocturnal creatures such as skunks or bats” are asked to call Hot Springs Animal Services at (501) 262-2091.
