Springdale police investigate gunshot sounds heard early Tuesday and find blood on the ground

SPRINGDALE -- A drive-by shooting early Tuesday left bullet holes in a home at 1310 Crutcher St. and neighbors said they're rattled.

"It's kind of scary -- happening this close," said Larry Carl, who maintains the Crutcher Strawberry Apartments across the street.

Juanita Apon, 80, said her home was hit by two bullets on two sides. She said the shooting was a drive-by style.

Apon bought her 1950s home in 1964, she said. She grows tomatoes in pots on her porch. Until Tuesday, the neighborhood was quiet, but Apon isn't worried about the recent shooting because she's been in the neighborhood a long time, she said.

Several neighbors called police about 5:30 a.m. and said they heard four to five shots near the apartments, according to a police report. One caller heard a car running, according to the report.

Neighbors said the gunshots were "quick, one right after the other," according to the police record.

Carl was awake at the time, but like some other neighbors, he said he didn't hear anything.

Crutcher Street apartments usually are quiet, Carl said. He and Apon didn't remember any previous drive-by shootings.

About 50 police officers closed off the apartment complex early Tuesday and visited homes in the neighborhood, Carl said.

One man told police he saw someone in a vehicle shoot five rounds at the apartments, according to the report. The vehicle was eastbound on Raedels Avenue to Crutcher Street and fired to the east, according to the report.

Police found two or three shell casings in the road, according to the police reports.

Lt. Scott Lewis, spokesman, said he had no information about the shells. He didn't answer a question about whether police are looking for a vehicle.

Lewis said police found blood on the ground near Apon's house, but that blood might not be related to the shooting.

Police found a person "bleeding and running" near where the shooting occurred, according to a police report. Police took a woman who needed stitches on her arm to a hospital, according to the report.

Lewis said police have no victim, no suspects, no arrests and little information about Tuesday's shooting.

The report of gunshots came hours after two calls to police about people with guns, according to a police dispatch log online. A person with a gun was reportedly seen at 7:05 p.m. Monday at 305 Berry St., then a similar report was made at 8:41 p.m. at 2005 W. Emma Ave.

Lewis didn't say if those calls were linked to the shooting.

The shooting comes a month after a 14-year-old boy was shot on his bicycle in a gang-related shooting at Crawford Avenue and Marylyn Street in the northern part of town.

So far this year, two people died in gang shootings and three others were wounded. Lewis wouldn't say if the recent shooting is gang-related. The apartment complex is just less than a mile away from the fatal shootings in March and April.
