The Fort Smith Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service have been asked to assist the sheriff's office in the search for Michael Jones, 36, who is being sought on a Greenwood District Court warrant on an aggravated-robbery charge.

A news release from the sheriff's office said that after the warrant was issued, Jones contacted investigators and said he "will not go back to prison and will have a violent encounter with law enforcement."

The release said Jones has a violent criminal history and that he is armed and a threat to public safety.

Jones is described as white, 6 feet 1 inches tall and weighing 170 pounds. Anyone with information about Jones' whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the sheriff's office at (479) 783-1051.

Sheriff's officials say in the early hours of July 27, the residents of a home in the 1800 block of Red Brown Place southeast of Greenwood were awakened by two men in their bedroom. One of the men was armed with a handgun.

The men demanded money they said was owed to them, authorities said. The residents were held at gunpoint as items were taken from the home.

Sheriff's investigators identified one of the men as Steven Flynn, 47, of Fort Smith, and a warrant for residential burglary was issued against him.

Flynn surrendered to sheriff's deputies last week and was being held in the Sebastian County jail Tuesday in lieu of $25,000 bond.
