Clowney's father denied bail

The father of Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was denied bond Wednesday after being charged with two counts of attempted murder in a shooting at a Rock Hill, S.C., bar. A lawyer asked for bond because Clowney's father, David Morgan, was hurt in the shooting Tuesday. Local media reported that police opposed the request because of the seriousness of the charges. Rock Hill Police Capt. Mark Bollinger said the department added charges based on continued investigation. Morgan also was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm by someone convicted of a violent crime and carrying a pistol unlawfully, according to arrest warrants. A police report from the Rock Hill Police Department said the 45-year-old Morgan was removed from the bar for sitting on a stage. Police say he was seen later at the back of the property before firing several rounds at Braxton Homesley, described in the police report as the victim. Police say Homesley returned fire.

Cavs sign Jefferson

The Cleveland Cavaliers have made their signing of free-agent forward Richard Jefferson official. Jefferson's deal was agreed upon last month and reported by The Associated Press and several media outlets. The 14-year veteran gives the Cavs another experienced wing player who can spread the floor as well as back up LeBron James. Jefferson spent last season with Dallas and had been expected to re-sign with the Mavericks. However, the chance to chase an NBA title lured him to the Cavs, who made it to the finals this season before losing in six games to Golden State. The 6-foot-7 Jefferson has averaged 13.9 points in his career and appeared in 105 playoff games. Last season, he averaged 5.8 points and 16.8 minutes.

Isner moves to third round

John Isner hit 17 aces and won 37 of 40 first-serve points Wednesday to advance into the third round of the Citi Open by beating Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic 6-3, 7-6 (5). Isner, seeded eighth at the hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open, never faced a break point, powering serves that regularly topped 130 mph. The American compiled a 26-9 edge in winners. The runner-up in Washington in 2007 and 2013, Isner had his left leg massaged by a trainer late in the second set, then was two points from being pushed to a third when the 51st-ranked Estrella Burgos took a 5-4 lead in the tiebreaker. Isner took the final three points -- delivering a 139 mph service winner and a 125 mph ace, then watching as Estrella Burgos pushed a forehand wide on match point. Trailing 5-4 but on serve in the second set, Isner fell behind love-15 by dumping a forehand into the net that put Estrella Burgos three points from taking the set. Isner responded by reeling off the next four points with the help of serves at 131, 134, 126 and 122 mph.

Donald Sterling files for divorce

Former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has filed for divorce from his wife of nearly 60 years on Wednesday as he continues to battle her over ownership of the team.

Sterling, 81, cited irreconcilable differences in paperwork submitted to the Los Angeles Superior Court, attorney Bobby Samini said. That paperwork was initially rejected by the court as incomplete, but it was corrected and resubmitted afterward. It lists their date of separation as Aug. 1, 2012.

Donald Sterling also filed a petition in probate court Wednesday for an accounting and distribution of assets related to the $2 billion sale of the Clippers to ex-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, and claiming he had a right to half of the community property, according to the court documents.

Attorney Pierce O’Donnell said Shelly Sterling has no comment and had not seen either court filing.

Donald Sterling is suing his wife and the NBA in federal court over the $2 billion sale of the team. She negotiated the deal with Ballmer after doctors found Donald Sterling incompetent to handle his business affairs.

The two filings come two weeks before the couple’s 60th anniversary and about four months after a judge ordered V. Stiviano — a woman who Shelly Sterling alleged was her husband’s mistress — to turn over the keys to a $1.8 million house that Donald Sterling bought her and to pay Shelly Sterling about $800,000 that her husband showered on the younger woman in cash, a Ferrari and other luxury vehicles.

The ruling came nearly a year after a recording of Donald Sterling telling Stiviano not to associate with black people led the NBA to ban him for life and fine him $2.5 million. The recording was leaked weeks after Shelly Sterling sued Stiviano, alleging she was her husband’s mistress.

While Shelly Sterling acknowledged marital problems, she said the couple never separated even though she had divorce papers drawn up.

The couple testified at trial in March in Los Angeles Superior Court about their enduring love for each other, displaying cards they gave each other for anniversaries and birthdays.
