Arkansas legislator eyes changes to religious objections law

LITTLE ROCK — An opponent of Arkansas' religious objections law says he's considering proposing changing it to include protections for gays and lesbians — but also make clear that ministers would not have to perform same-sex weddings.

Democratic Rep. Clark Tucker of Little Rock said Friday he's considering whether to propose such a change when the Legislature convenes in 2017. Tucker said he believes the proposal would have more support than expanding the state's civil rights law to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

Tucker appeared before the Political Animals Club with Republican Rep. Bob Ballinger, who sponsored the religious objections law that was rewritten in the final days of the session after facing widespread criticism that it was anti-gay.
