Who's hot

ANDREW BENINTENDI (short-A Red Sox) scored 5 runs on 11 hits, including 1 triple and 3 home runs, with 3 RBI to raise his batting average from .244 to .283. Two of the three home runs came against the Tri-City Valley Cats (short-A Astros) on Tuesday.

DJ BAXENDALE (AA Twins) earned a victory against the Mobile BayBears (AA Diamondbacks) on Aug. 9 and saw his ERA drop from 3.99 to 3.92. Baxendale allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 6 innings.

Who's not

CRAIG GENTRY (AAA Athletics) saw his batting average drop from .252 to .238 after scoring 1 run on 1 hit in his past 5 games.

TREY KILLIAN (R Rockies) suffered a loss Aug. 9 against the Missoula Osprey (R Diamondbacks) and saw his ERA rise from 5.81 to 7.48. Killian allowed 6 earned runs on 7 hits with 3 walks in 1 1/3 innings.

News and notes

• Pitcher Drew Smyly (Arkansas Razorbacks, Little Rock Central) made steady improvements while pitching in the minor leagues to rehabilitate a torn labrum and, according to ESPN.com, is scheduled to start for the Tampa Bay Rays today against the Texas Rangers. ESPN.com said Smyly threw a bullpen session Friday with no problems.

"I feel really good that I've worked hard the past three months to get back to where I am. I feel healthy," Smyly told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. "A lot of guys counted me out. There was probably a day or two when I wasn't sure if I would pitch again this year as well. And here I am, getting ready to go. So I am really, really excited."

Smyly went 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA in 4 starts for the Class AAA Durham Bulls and the high-A Charlotte Stone Crabs. Both losses came against the Norfolk Tides (AAA Orioles) in Smyly's first and last starts. In his final start Tuesday, Smyly allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 4 innings. Topkin reported Smyly's velocity was consistently in the low 90s and he had no discomfort or concerns.

"You can look into the box score all you want, but I walked away very happy," Smyly said.

Smyly, 26, complained of tightness in his arm during a start at Boston on May 5. The Rays announced he would miss the rest of the season and transferred him to the 60-day disabled list. Smyly opted for rest instead of surgery and Rays Manager Kevin Cash backtracked on the original prognosis, saying Smyly had the chance to pitch again this season.

• Pitcher Jess Todd (Arkansas Razorbacks) was placed on the disabled list by the Pawtucket (R.I.) Red Sox (AAA Red Sox) on Aug. 6 with right triceps tendinitis. "I'm honestly not sure about the extent of the injury," Pawtucket radio broadcaster Josh Maurer said. "I do know he is still with the ball club everyday, so I imagine he could come back relatively quickly. But that's just an observation more than concrete information." Todd is 3-5 this season with a 5.07 ERA in 22 appearances for the Red Sox. He last pitched on July 31 against the Buffalo Bisons (AAA Blue Jays).
