2nd round of candidates cut to 2 in UAM chancellor hunt

A search committee has whittled down the finalists for the chancellorship at the University of Arkansas at Monticello to two.

The finalists are Ty Handy, the president of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Fla.; and Karla Hughes, the executive vice president and provost of the University of Louisiana System in Baton Rouge. The two will visit the Monticello campus in September.

The candidates are vying for the chancellor's position vacated by Jack Lassiter. Lassiter, 69, retired Jan. 5 after leading the university for nearly a decade. He earned $196,974 annually.

Jay Jones, the vice chancellor for finance and administration at the campus, has been serving as interim chancellor.

The search committee had narrowed down a list of 31 applicants to four, one of whom later dropped out. Two were eliminated, and the last withdrew his name from candidacy.

The panel opened up the application period once more during the summer, drawing eight candidates, including Jones. The group made the decision on the two candidates last week.

The other candidates, who weren't selected as finalists, were:

• Tom Corti, vice president for student affairs at Farmingdale State College of the State University of New York in Farmingdale, N.Y.

• Michel Delorme, associate dean for education, programs and faculty at ESDES, the business school of Universite Catholique de Lyon in France.

• Jacquelyn Elliott, president of North Arkansas College in Harrison.

• Malcolm Frisbie, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky.

• Ashley Scott, blogger on The 50 Co-Op.
