Highway agency to give $3M toward new UCA major

The state Highway and Transportation Department will present a $3 million check to the University of Central Arkansas' College of Business on Thursday.

UCA submitted a proposal through the Highway and Transportation Department's Arkansas Commercial Truck Safety and Education Program for the endowment of a faculty position in the College of Business as part of a new major.

"The AHTD is proud to help support educational programs that affect the transportation industry," department Director Scott Bennett said. "Engineering programs are obvious to most people, but certainly the trucking industry is an important user of our transportation system."

The position, according to a statement, will help in the implementation of a supply chain logistics management major.

"Logistics and supply chain management represents an important industry in Arkansas and is the backbone of commerce across the nation," UCA President Tom Courtway said.

The Arkansas Highway Commission approved the proposal in June.
