Pine Valley Disc Golf Tournament

Pine Valley Golf Course, 9311 Old Tom Box Road in Sherwood, was one of the first in Arkansas to set up an 18-hole course for foot golf, a game played with a regulation soccer ball. Now they're branching out into another hybrid sport -- disc golf.

At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Pine Valley is hosting its inaugural Disc Golf Doubles Tournament.

Two-person teams will play an 18-hole course with "temporary baskets" constructed under the supervision of avid disc golf fanatics with challenge, playability and fun in mind. All proceeds from the tournament will go toward buying permanent baskets and making the course a fixture at Pine Valley.

There will be pro and amateur divisions, with sharpshooters as well as players who vaguely remember throwing a Frisbee welcome to participate. The tournament is a scramble, meaning that the best of a team's throws is used in scoring. Entry fees are $30 per amateur team, $40 for pro.

Players must supply their own discs, which can be bought at most sporting goods stores.

First and second places in both divisions will receive trophies. The longest drive of the day will also be recognized.

Registration can be done in advance by phone or from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Saturday at the golf course. Only the first 36 paid teams will be accepted, so early registration is recommended.
