Hot Springs Sentinel-Record general manager named

Bill Elderton, former general manager for the Hot Springs Village Voice, was named general manager of the Sentinel-Record in Hot Springs on Tuesday.

Elderton, 72, also has worked at the Camden News, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and as publisher for several newspapers in Arkansas and two in Mississippi. He began his career in advertising working for his hometown paper, The Springdale News.

“[A community newspaper’s] only purpose for existing is to serve the needs of the community, from their primary news source to telling them what’s on sale at the supermarket,” Elderton said.

Jeff Jeffus, president of WEHCO Newspapers, Inc., called Elderton a proven leader and veteran newspaper man.

Nat Lea, president and chief operating officer of Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Inc., said, “I think we found somebody that understands the community of Hot Springs and understands the newspaper extremely well.”

Gary Troutman resigned as general manager of the Sentinel-Record in May to take a position with First Security Bank, which had opened its first branch in Hot Springs.

The Sentinel-Record is owned by WEHCO Media, Inc., the parent company of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
