Sandra R. Wilson

Where I live: Quapaw Quarter

Occupation: I am founder/director of Reach Out, a nonprofit organization that assists and advocates for the homeless. I'm also organizer of Homeless Services Day (Oct. 17 in North Little Rock Riverfront Park) and the 11th annual Christmas Caravan for the Homeless (Dec. 19).

My favorite space is: My back porch, where I sit and look out at my backyard flower garden and watch the birds.

Why? I love nature, being outdoors, beautiful flowers, and the privacy of my personal happy place. I created a space of bright color by painting planters, seating, bird feeders, my pallet garden bed -- and even my multicolored garden shed, which was built by my son from old salvaged wooden doors. I get out of bed in the morning, grab a cup of coffee and go straight out to enjoy blooms opening and birds having their breakfast. Friends often stop by and we usually spend a couple of hours just visiting and enjoying this peaceful space. I spend as much time as possible here, have nearly all meals here, have meetings with volunteers. I could probably live here if the weather permitted. Just give me fans for the heat and a patio heater and fire pit when it is cold.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Add my neighbors' backyard to mine so I could have more space for more plants, and for a larger space for our volunteers to meet.
