Amy White

Where I live: Fayetteville's University Heights

Occupation: Food safety labeling compliance for Wal-Mart

My favorite space is: My front porch

Why? My porch is a gathering place for friends, family and the occasional stray animal. My cat is even named Veranda because she wandered up to the porch and moved in about 10 years ago! The house dates from the late turn of the 20th century, and was outside of Fayetteville city limits when it was constructed. During the last renovation, I had the ceiling painted "haint blue" to be true to its long Southern history.

I have learned through people who summered here in the 1940s that they had about a dozen white rocking chairs here, and the home was surrounded by orchards and Tennessee walking horses. A German shorthaired pointer also lived here, which is ironic because I am involved in German shorthaired pointer rescue and have two that enjoy the porch with me now. I have reunited lost dogs with their owners here, held a dance party or two, and kicked off a city council campaign during a thunderstorm. I host brunches and cocktail parties here, and during Razorback football season you can find friends and family gathered here before, during and after the game.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Add a ceiling fan or two for those hot summer afternoons.
