Pulling old bridge to slow I-40 traffic

Work to remove the old Norman Road bridge above Interstate 40 in North Little Rock will require overnight lane closures on I-40 for three nights beginning Monday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The new bridge is to open to traffic Monday.

Removing the old bridge will require alternately closing eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 40 at Crystal Hill Road and the interchange as well as alternately closing inside and outside lanes from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day through Thursday, weather permitting.

Brief traffic stops will occur intermittently between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. each day while work is performed over the travel lanes, the department said. Traffic will be controlled using barrels, electronic message boards and advance warning signs.

The work is part of a $38.4 million project under the $1.8 billion Connecting Arkansas Program to widen 5.1 miles of I-40 to six lanes from four between I-430 and Arkansas 365. The project is anticipated to be complete by the middle of next year, the department said.
