Shooting suspect, 18, nabbed in Fort Smith; victim is stable

FORT SMITH -- The suspect in a shooting in Fort Smith on Thursday was arrested without incident Friday morning after a passer-by notified police to his location.

Brandon Mathis, 18, was arrested on a warrant charging him with first-degree battery after Fort Smith police received a tip about 7 a.m. that he was seen near a convenience store at Grand and North Albert Pike avenues, police spokesman Sgt. Daniel Grubbs said.

He was taken into custody without incident and was held in the Sebastian County jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Mathis is accused of shooting Gustavo Delgado, 28, several times with a 9mm handgun during an argument Thursday morning in an alley in the 2100 block of North I Street.

Police said the two men had been feuding when Mathis and a girlfriend went to Delgado's home and confronted him and his girlfriend in the alley. Delgado was armed with a golf club when the shooting occurred.

He underwent surgery at a local hospital and was stable in its intensive care unit on Thursday night, police said.
