Cedarville’s head football coach entered a not-guilty plea through his lawyer Tuesday on several charges related to an Oct. 16 incident at a game in Elkins.

A trial for Kevin Lea, 36, has been scheduled for Jan. 5.

Lea was arrested after yelling profanities and racially charged statements to Elkins coach Thurman Shaw in the final minutes of the game, according to an Elkins Police Department report.

After the game, Elkins players were sent to the locker room. Cedarville coaches and players moved toward the Elkins sideline when Lea began yelling at Shaw, who left the field at the request of police, according to the report.

The report stated that Cedarville players and coaches began to "swarm" police as an officer tried to intervene, and "several hundred” Elkins fans left the stands to aid authorities.

Lea was arrested the next week in Cedarville on suspicion of inciting a riot, failure to disperse, harassment, endangering the welfare of a minor and obstructing governmental operations.

Lea is the son of Andrea Lea, state auditor.

Dan Foreman, Cedarville superintendent, confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Lea is still the head coach.
