Don't condone bullies

Re Donald Trump: When I saw the repulsive and reprehensible actions of a presidential candidate, I knew I just had to keep this unfortunate topic going. If we as Americans fail to stand together and show our support for our disabled, who is his next victim of offensive, bullying ways?

A Donald Trump presidency is unacceptable!

We are better human beings than that. We have to stand together in the fight against any kind of bullying ... that's essentially what his despicable past and current behavior really is.

It's disturbing to me and sad that it appears Trump still may not suffer any consequences again.

Let's keep the conversation going and make sure that no one is above repercussions of such extreme distasteful behavior.

It's far more unequal

Jerry Jackson's recent letter commented that income inequality in this country has become so bad that half of American families earn less than average. While potentially causing a morning chuckle, it was not mathematically accurate.

Suppose we have a small town with 10 families. Nine households earned $50,000 a year. One family earned a million dollars a year. The total income of the 10 families would be $1.45 million. Dividing that total by 10, the average household income would be $145,000.

Thus, in our small town, 90 percent of families earned less than the average income.

So contrary to the spirit of Jackson's letter, income inequality in America has resulted in way more than 50 percent of families earning less than the average.

What will be ultimate

Hey, folks, in the age-old quest for the ultimate stupidity it would seem that the people at Crystal Bridges Museum have raised the bar to new heights by paying $7.6 million for a $200 pile of candy.

The challenge is out there now. The previous record surely was held by our federal government and I cannot believe that it will not rise to this challenge, but it will require our legislators, who have up to now taken a rather lazy approach to stupidity, to actually put forth some real effort and ingenuity.

I will be watching the Hillary supporters. Possibility a really large donation to the Clinton Foundation could be a real contender, but the voting would be close.

Enough with cute kids

When will it all end? First it was "cute kids" advertising cars on TV. Now it is "cute kids" doing the weather report.

If I tune in to find out what the forecast is, I do not expect to see some "cute kid" stumbling over the report. If the "cute kid" wants to report the weather, it should be done in the classroom, not on the TV. Or perhaps we need to have a Captain Kangaroo program where the "cute kids" can assemble, and get their one minute of fame on TV. But not in advertisements or delivering the weather report.

Leave those spots be

A few months ago I wrote a letter condemning the use of VA parking by individuals who are going to the UAMS center.

After my letter, things changed for a while by having the VA police stationed at the entrance to the parking area asking if one had an appointment or was visiting a patient in the VA medical center. This prevented the abuse of veteran parking areas.

However, during the past few months, the trend has begun again.

I have, as I am sure have many other veterans arriving for their appointments, observed that many people still park and walk across the street to visit the UAMS facilities. Meanwhile the VA police sit in their office there adjoining the emergency room waiting area.

I think it would be very easy to stop the unsanctioned parking by simply installing a temporary post at the entrance to check arrivals. I say this because on a past Wednesday I drove around the parking lot for 15 minutes and just barely made my appointment.

I urge all veterans that, if you observe clowns parking and walking over to UAMS, just simply park behind that car, requiring the persons to have to visit the VA police in order to move their car. Do this and not only will you make the ones doing it accountable, but it will also make these VA police do the job as it needs to be done.

Just my take on the problem.

On the lack of charity

In response to Mr. Robert Spencer's Saturday letter, first of all, there's a big difference between attacking one's beliefs and simply disagreeing.

The Syrian refugees don't want to come here to create "Mecca West." The "illegals" (as Spencer calls them) aren't trying to create Mexico North. They simply want a better life.

Do you think Jesus would turn them away for speaking a different language and having a different religion?

Why is it that it seems the most staunchly religious are the least compassionate to those in need? Why do those who claim to be under attack for their religious beliefs want to turn away those fleeing war and persecution?

Why are those who are commanded to love all so intolerant to those who are different?

It's very easy to parrot "love thy neighbor" when you are sitting in your pew on Sunday, but much harder to practice. Didn't Jesus himself say "as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me?"

That's certainly something to remember the next time you use your Christian beliefs as an excuse for your lack of Christian charity.

Surely you're joking!

I'm still waiting for this newspaper to report that the article/announcement re the $7.6 million candy "art" at Crystal Bridges is really a belated April Fool's joke.

Surely there are better ways to spend this sum of money.
