Filipinos evacuate as typhoon lands

Philippine authorities evacuated more than 700,000 people as Typhoon Melor made landfall Monday. The storm was expected to hit areas pummeled by Typhoon Haiyan two years ago.

Packing winds of up to 93 mph, Melor hit Northern Samar province before noon with heavy rain, the Philippine weather bureau said in a bulletin.

Of those evacuated, more than 500,000 were in Albay, a coastal province in central Philippines.

The storm is expected to have a “high humanitarian impact.”
