Wreck on U.S. 64 kills 2 of Newport

Two people from Newport were killed in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 64 in Woodruff County on Tuesday afternoon, the Arkansas State Police reported.

A 2011 Ford was headed west on U.S. 64 and was attempting to turn into a business at 1:29 p.m. when the vehicle was rear-ended by a 2005 Freightliner truck and was then pushed into the eastbound lanes of traffic, the report said. The Ford was then hit by a 2006 Peterbilt truck.

Jeffery Dawson, 42, a passenger in the Ford, died at the scene of the crash, the report says. The driver of the Ford, Brenda Dawson, 72, was taken to Regional One Health in Memphis and pronounced dead.

The driver of the Peterbilt, William Aughenbaugh, 64, of Marion, was injured in the crash and taken to CrossRidge Community Hospital in Wynne, the report says.

The report does not name the driver of the Freightliner or indicate if that person was injured in the crash.

At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and roads were dry.
