Where I live: Capitol View neighborhood of Little Rock, at the "International House of Shenanigans," within walking distance of both the state Capitol and the legendary White Water Tavern.

Occupation: director of the Arkansas Sierra Club.

My favorite space is: the front porch.

Why? Happily, after my recent move to this neighborhood, the porch has become a nice gathering spot for friends and neighbors. Almost weekly, a good 10 to 15 or more porch sitters will come by, sit a spell, bend an elbow and take a shot at solving one or more of the world's problems. We also play a lot of records out here, and it's been fun (and sobering) to show some of my younger friends exactly how to operate a turntable. I've always wanted a home where people feel comfortable dropping by and spending time, and the porch has made it happen.

The porch also has an outstanding view of the state Capitol building, which is nicely decorated this season and adds a little something extra to our porch festivities.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: add a small railing so nobody leans back and falls off into the hedges. It hasn't happened yet, but the possibility constantly ups the excitement level around here.
