Civil War events feature play's cast

Interaction with the cast of a Civil War-themed play, along with various lectures and exhibits, highlight a schedule of activities in observance of the war's 150th anniversary as sanctioned by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission.

The cast of The Whipping Man will be featured Tuesday at a Brown Bag Lunch at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center in Little Rock. The Whipping Man is a Civil War-themed play being performed at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre through Feb. 8.

Opening Feb. 8 at Lower White River State Park in Des Arc (Prairie County) will be the exhibit "War on the Water: Gunboats on the White River."

Kelly Jones will speak Feb. 11 at a Brown Bag Lunch lecture on "Opportunity on the Edge of the South: Slaves in the Wilds of Arkansas" at the Old State House Museum in Little Rock.

A Valentine's-themed exhibit, "All I Possess is Yours: Civil War Love Letters and Valentines," will be on display Feb. 14 at Jacksonport State Park (Jackson County).

Lori Walker will be speaker at the Civil War Roundtable of the Delta meeting Feb. 16 at the Beth El Heritage Hall in Helena-West Helena. Walker will speak about the Freedom Trail, a network of sites between Pine Bluff and Helena-West Helena.
