Sheriff: 24 cow heads illegally dumped near Arkansas River

SALLISAW, Okla. — Authorities in eastern Oklahoma have cited a man who they say illegally dumped 24 cow heads and 3 dead calves near a dam along the Arkansas River.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart says the man from Muldrow was cited Sunday with illegal dumping. His identity hasn't been released.

The remains were found Saturday near at trash bin close to the Robert S. Kerr Dam near Sallisaw. Lockhart says about 14 of the cows had ear tags and it appears they were butchered for meat.

Deputies used tags to track the cattle to the suspect. They say the man admitted to dumping the cattle.

The remains were buried in a landfill. The sheriff's department is seeking reimbursement for the disposal.

Lockhart says the state agriculture department will consider charges or fines.
