NLR to forfeit 2013-14 football, basketball victories

North Little Rock High School will forfeit all of its varsity football victories and varsity boys' basketball victories during the 2013-2014 school year in which an ineligible player participated, the Arkansas Activities Association announced in a news release Thursday.

The forfeit includes 10 victories from the 2013 football season, and at least 24 victories from what was considered a state championship season of 26-2.

North Little Rock also surrendered the 2014 Class 7A boys state basketball championship trophy to the AAA.

"We are grateful to North Little Rock High School for its integrity and honesty while dealing with a sensitive issue," AAA executive director Lance Taylor said in the release.

The district self-reported on Thursday what is considered a violation of AAA rules and took immediate action. The AAA agrees that a violation occurred.

Superintendent Kelly Rodgers said in a statement that the district reported a violation concerning a recruitment rule.

"As soon as we discovered a violation had occurred, we determined the only right thing to do was to report it to the AAA," Rodgers said. "We know our student athletes will be disappointed with the forfeits, but we hope they understand that the most important thing is playing with integrity and ethics."

The district is also addressing personnel matters as part of the violation, according to the statement.

North Little Rock's boys basketball team defeated Springdale 89-81 in the 2014 7A state title game. The football team lost to Cabot in the 7A semifinals in 2013.
