34th SOUP SUNDAY

Ladling cups of love

34th annual slurp-fest helps to keep family aid organization afloat

With muffin tins or cardboard cup holders in hand, partygoers made their way around the Statehouse Convention Center's Wally Allen Ballroom on Feb. 8 gathering samples of soup. Thirty-five area restaurants ladled out their best soups for the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families' Soup Sunday, while other restaurants provided bread and desserts.

Having moved to a larger venue this year, there was plenty of seating and tables of silent auction items. Chef Payne Harding with Cache restaurant served up truffled lobster corn chowder in the VIP room assisted by JoJo Sims. There was also an area just for the kiddos with ice cream and hot dogs. The Big John Miller Band provided dance music.

More than 1,500 people attended the event, which raised about $100,000 for the nonprofit, said Cara Neal, the organization's administrative and events director. Arkansas Advocates' mission is one of ensuring that all children and their families have the resources and opportunities to lead healthy and productive lives and to realize their full potential. Molly McGowan was chairman of the Soup Sunday Committee.
